Award-winning boutique hotel opposite Abbey Gardens in Bury St. Edmunds
Dining
The Eaterie serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a fiercely seasonal menu guided by a local chef. The 12th-century underground vaults, built from the same stone as the Abbey, host private dining and events like Sunday Sessions and Steak Nights. Themed afternoon teas and collaborative culinary events are offered throughout the year.
Rooms & Suites
The hotel offers 77 bedrooms, many with views of the Abbey Ruins and deep copper bath tubs. Charles Dickens, a former guest, mentions the Angel Hotel in The Pickwick Papers. Each room includes bottled water and tea and coffee making facilities.
Location & Parking
The Angel Hotel sits on Angel Hill opposite the Abbey Gardens, in the town centre next to Abbeygate Street. It is within walking distance of the Theatre Royal and The Apex for evening shows, and a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. Valet parking is available for £7.50 per 24 hours, and a concierge team assists with on-site parking on a first-come, first-served basis.
Pet-Friendly Amenities
The hotel provides pet bowls and a soft toy for dogs upon arrival. Dogs are welcome in guest rooms and can walk directly from the hotel to the Abbey Gardens. Pet-friendly accommodations are available for both couples and families travelling with their pets.
Event Spaces & Vaults
The 12th-century vaults, with tunnels linking to the Abbey, serve as a private dining space for weddings and special occasions. The ground floor was fully refurbished in 2019, adding a lounge with a log fire and a bar with table service overlooking Angel Hill. Meeting and banquet facilities are available for business events and celebrations.
