600-year-old historic inn in Rye with Tudor architecture and 2 AA Rosette dining

Dining

The Mermaid Inn's restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes for fine French and British cuisine. Guests can order special diet menus, kids' meals, and wine or champagne from the on-site bar. Breakfast options include continental and full English, served in a dining room that once hosted Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother.

Accommodation

The inn offers 31 rooms, each with wooden panelling or carved beds and en suite bathrooms. Some rooms have picturesque views over Rye, and a number contain secret stairways hidden behind bookcases. The building retains original Norman cellars from the 12th century, a 1420 rebuild, and the Giant's Fireplace Bar.

History & Ghost Stories

The Mermaid Inn was a known stronghold for the Hawkhurst Gang smugglers in the 18th century who used its secret passageways. Room 17, known as Dr Syn's Bedchamber, is considered one of the most active haunted spots in England. Complimentary guided tours of the building are offered, covering these historic features and the ancient cellars.

Location & Parking

The inn is a 5-minute walk from Rye train station and close to Camber Castle, St Mary's Church, and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Free on-site parking is available, though the car park is small and sometimes full, with alternative pay-and-display parking nearby. An electric vehicle charging station is also provided for guests.

Bar & Lounge

The Giant's Fireplace Bar has a large wooden beam supported by stone pillars and was once frequented by smugglers. Over 60 gins are available, alongside local ales and a wide selection of spirits. The bar area also includes an outdoor terrace and a veranda for warmer months.
