Originally built in 1760 as the Phoenix Inn, the hotel was renamed in 1805 after Nelson's Trafalgar victory and later became a frequent stay for Charles Dickens while he wrote Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop. The famous Bleak House, Dickens' home in Broadstairs, is within sight, and nearby attractions include the Powell-Cotton Museum and Monkton Nature Reserve.
