Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland, England

The 19th-century country house offers 15 individually styled rooms, each with en-suite bathrooms and views of the hotel gardens, the village church, or the Esk Valley. Room 11 is a full suite with a four-poster bed and valley views, while the junior suite (Room 4) provides extra space and panoramic scenery. All rooms include flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, tea and coffee-making facilities, and homemade shortbread.

The Valley View Restaurant serves an à la carte menu based on locally-sourced Yorkshire produce and Whitby fish, with a separate bar menu available in the informal bar area. Unique dining pods offer an intimate experience with music streaming, and the on-site coffee house serves homemade cakes and light snacks. Breakfast is cooked to order using local produce, with options including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and a complimentary glass of Prosecco or Buck's Fizz.

A short walk behind the hotel leads to the Mallyan Spout waterfall, a 20-minute downhill walk into a wooded gorge. The hotel is located in the North York Moors National Park, within walking distance of Goathland railway station (featured in the Harry Potter films) and close to Whitby Abbey (20 minutes' drive). Staff provide extensive local knowledge for personalized walking recommendations, including routes to Beck Hole and the Birch Hall Inn.

Three separate lounges with log fires are available for guest relaxation, each offering garden views and a welcoming atmosphere. The Hunt Bar serves local ales, gins, and cocktails alongside a selection of wines and champagnes, and doubles as a local pub. Free on-site parking is provided, and luggage storage, packed lunches, and fax/photocopying services are available upon request.

The hotel's dining pods allow couples to book a private meal with personalized music streaming, a feature not commonly found in countryside hotels. The on-site coffee house offers a dedicated space for homemade cakes and light snacks outside of meal times. Board games and puzzles are provided in the shared lounge areas, and special dietary menus can be arranged with prior notice.
