5-star Tudor castle hotel in Gloucestershire
History & Grounds
Thornbury Castle is the only Tudor castle in England opened as a hotel. King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn slept in one of the bedchambers and walked through the ancient gardens. The castle offers on-site croquet and archery, and can arrange clay-pigeon shooting and falconry with prior notice at an extra charge.
Accommodation
Atmospheric bedchambers include the Katherine of Arragon Tower Suite with a 10-foot wide bed and a marble-floored bathroom with heated floors. The Queen Elizabeth I Suite sits at the top of an independent tower reached by a stone spiral staircase. Each room offers period furnishings, Molton Brown toiletries, and suites like the Mary Queen of Scots feature four-poster beds and original Tudor windows.
Dining
The hotel's restaurant holds three AA Rosettes and serves a tasting menu with wine pairings from Masi wines. Breakfast offers a full English cooked to order, with freshly squeezed orange juice.
