16th-century coaching inn with American Independence legacy in historic Lewes

The White Hart - A Heartwood Inn dates to the 16th century and served as a coaching inn where Thomas Paine developed the ideas for his pamphlet "Common Sense" in the old debating club. This pamphlet sold half a million copies in 1776 and directly inspired the Declaration of Independence. Guests dine in a Georgian antique oak-panelled restaurant that preserves the building's listed status with wood panelling, oak beams, and open fireplaces.
