Former 16th-century coaching inn in Lewes, cradle of American Independence

The White Hart is the site of the Headstrong Club, where Thomas Paine debated the policies that led to his pamphlet "Common Sense." This pamphlet sold half a million copies in 1776 and directly inspired the Declaration of Independence. The building retains its 16th-century wood panelling, oak beams, and open fireplaces throughout the public areas.
