YHA Whitby - InterWar Hostel at the Foot of Whitby Abbey with Free Abbey Entry
Location
YHA Whitby occupies a historic building on the headland immediately next to Whitby Abbey, offering direct access to the abbey ruins and museum via a short walk through the gardens. The cobbled quayside is a 5-minute walk down the famous 199 steps, and Whitby's sandy beaches are reached in the same time. The town centre and rail station lie a 15-minute walk away, with a tour bus stopping outside every hour for easy exploration.
Accommodation & Rooms
The majority of rooms contain bunk beds, with options ranging from single-gender dormitories to private family rooms, some with private bathrooms. Room 12 offers direct views over the abbey and coast, and all rooms include sockets, lights, and a comfortable mattress with duvet. A lift serves all floors, and key-card access secures the main building for guests.
Dining & Self-Catering
The on-site cafe and bar serves cooked breakfast, lunch, and evening meals, with a children's eat-for-£1 deal when an adult meal is purchased. A large self-catering kitchen is available for guests to prepare their own meals, equipped with pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. The cafe seating area overlooks Whitby town and the coast, with outdoor tables on the garden terrace.
Facilities for Families & Accessibility
The hostel provides a separate games room and a TV lounge, plus a picnic area with outdoor furniture in the extensive gardens. Wheelchair-accessible rooms come with emergency cords in bathroom, lower sinks, and toilet grab rails; free parking is available on site for guests. Family rooms are standard, and the playground at the adjacent holiday park is open to hostel guests.
Guest Services & Extras
Every overnight stay includes complimentary entry to Whitby Abbey and its museum, a ticket worth £14 per adult.
